Nacho Libre (2006)

Nacho Libre is special because it commits, with straight-faced sincerity, to one of the strangest underdog dreams ever put on film: a humble monk stepping into the neon-mythic world of lucha libre to do some good and maybe feel seen. Jared Hess directs with a deadpan, storybook oddness that turns awkward pauses, homemade costumes, and exaggerated wrestling theatrics into a surprisingly sweet kind of poetry, and Jack Black meets that tone perfectly—big-hearted, ridiculous, and oddly moving in the same breath. The vibe is goofy and whimsical, with slapstick bouts and quotable absurdity, but there’s genuine warmth in how it cares about its little community and its misfit heroes. If you don’t enjoy offbeat, intentionally “clunky” comedy, it might not land, but if you’re even slightly open to its peculiar rhythm, it’s the kind of comedy that wins you over by being unabashedly itself.

Nacho Libre is trying to be a sweet, offbeat underdog story wrapped in deadpan absurdity—part sports movie, part weird little fable about doing good for the wrong reasons. The problem is the humor is extremely specific: lots of awkward pauses, repetitive gags, and intentionally dumb slapstick that either lands perfectly for you or feels like it’s stalling for time. The plot and characters are pretty thin, so if you need sharp writing, big laughs-per-minute, or emotional payoff that’s earned rather than willed into place, this can feel like a one-joke movie stretched to feature length. Still, Jack Black’s commitment and the oddball tone can be strangely charming, and if you liked Napoleon Dynamite’s vibe or enjoy goofy wrestling silliness, it might hit that comfort-comedy sweet spot.
