Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007)
Molly Mahoney is the awkward and insecure manager of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium—the strangest, most fantastic and most wonderful toy store in the world. After Mr. Magorium bequeaths the store to her, a dark and ominous change begins to take over the once-remarkable Emporium.
What people think about Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium is the kind of family fantasy that doesn’t just show you magic—it asks you to remember why you ever believed in it, and then makes that feel honorable rather than childish. Zach Helm’s toy-store wonderland is warmly imagined without turning into visual noise, giving Dustin Hoffman room to be delightfully eccentric and unexpectedly tender, while Natalie Portman grounds the whimsy with a very human portrait of self-doubt and creative blockage. The vibe is gentle, funny, and quietly poignant, with a soft undercurrent about change and letting go that lands more like a hug than a lecture. If you’re looking for big action or razor-edged comedy, this may feel too sweet, but if you want a charming, sincere film that leaves you a little lighter than it found you, it’s a lovely bet.
Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium is clearly aiming for a warm, whimsical fable about grief, self-belief, and rediscovering creativity, wrapped in a candy-colored toy-store fantasy. The problem is that the story often feels like a thin message delivery system—lots of charm and earnest speeches, not much narrative momentum or surprising imagination to match the premise. Dustin Hoffman brings a twinkly oddball sweetness and the production design has bursts of visual delight, but Natalie Portman and Jason Bateman are stuck playing variations of “sad and skeptical” for long stretches. If you want a gentle, kid-friendly mood piece with mild emotional themes, it may hit the spot; if you’re expecting genuinely inventive fantasy or a plot with real bite, this one can feel bland and oddly weightless.
