Waist Deep (2006)
An ex-convict gets tangled up with a gang after his car is hijacked with his son inside.
What people think about Waist Deep
Waist Deep takes a familiar “one bad day” setup and charges it with real urgency, turning a frantic rescue into a street-level sprint through Los Angeles that feels sweaty, immediate, and personal. Tyrese Gibson makes O2 more than an action engine—there’s a bruised decency under the rage—and Vondie Curtis-Hall gives the mayhem a pulse of emotion and social texture that keeps the stakes human even when the bullets start flying. Meagan Good is a spark plug as Coco, and her chemistry with Gibson adds warmth and volatility to a story that could’ve been just noise. It’s not for everyone—the violence is graphic and the world is harsh—but if you want a gritty, high-energy thriller with heart beating under the gunfire, this one delivers.
Waist Deep is trying to be a gritty, pedal-to-the-floor rescue thriller about a dad with a past doing anything to get his kid back, and the setup is genuinely urgent. The problem is it plays like a greatest-hits compilation of mid-2000s crime clichés, with a script that leans on convenience and tough-guy posturing instead of believable escalation, so some scenes land as unintentionally funny rather than tense. Tyrese brings real drive, Meagan Good adds spark, and the action moves briskly, but if you need smart plotting, grounded character choices, or tonal consistency, this will feel loud, familiar, and kind of hollow. It’s best for viewers who just want a straightforward, violent chase-and-shootout ride and don’t mind leaving logic at the door.
