Life of Pi (2012)

It does contain intense animal peril and some harsh moments, so it’s not for viewers who want a purely comforting ride—but if you’re open to a film that’s both thrilling and spiritually searching, it’s unforgettable.

Life of Pi is clearly aiming for a sweeping survival fable that doubles as a meditation on faith, storytelling, and what we choose to believe, and on that level it’s ambitious and often beautiful. Ang Lee delivers genuinely stunning imagery and a tense, resourceful man-versus-nature (and tiger) ordeal that can be mesmerizing if you’re happy to just go with it. But if you’re allergic to movies that underline their philosophy in big, deliberate strokes, the spiritual “meaning” can feel a bit preached rather than discovered, and the framing scenes may strike you as slower and emotionally cooler than the lifeboat material. Also be aware it’s not a cozy adventure: there’s sustained peril and several upsetting animal deaths, so if that’s a dealbreaker, this one will test your patience and your stomach.
