Flyboys (2006)
The adventures of the Lafayette Escadrille, young Americans who volunteered for the French military before the U.S. entered World War I, and became the country's first fighter pilots.
What people think about Flyboys
Flyboys is the kind of old-fashioned war adventure that sweeps you up on sheer momentum: young, untested Americans climbing into fragile canvas-and-wood planes and discovering, in the open sky, a terrifying new kind of combat. Tony Bill stages the WWI dogfights with a clean, kinetic clarity that makes every dive and turn feel earned, while the cinematography gives the clouds a romantic glow without ever forgetting what’s at stake. James Franco brings an easy, grounded charm, and Jean Reno lends the squadron a steady, human authority, so the camaraderie feels lived-in rather than manufactured. It does flirt with glossy, Hollywood sentiment and isn’t the last word in historical precision, but if you want a rousing, visually thrilling aerial drama with a touch of romance and a strong sense of brotherhood, it’s an easy recommendation.
Flyboys clearly wants to be a rousing, old-school war adventure about the first American fighter pilots, mixing brotherhood, romance, and airborne heroics into a crowd-pleasing package. The problem is the script leans hard on clichés and predictable beats, so the characters often feel like types rather than people, and the pacing can drag between set pieces. Some of the CGI-heavy dogfights look exciting at a glance but don’t always hold up, and if you care about historical accuracy, the movie plays pretty fast and loose. Still, if you’re in the mood for a glossy, sentimental WWI action drama and can accept “inspired by” history rather than history, there’s enough spectacle and earnestness to pass the time.
