Next Door (2005)

Next Door is the kind of thriller that doesn’t just twist your mind—it rearranges the room while you’re standing in it, using claustrophobic spaces and sly visual cues to make you question what you’ve just seen. Pål Sletaune builds a seductive, maze-like atmosphere where the camera, production design, and a haunting score all conspire to mirror a psyche coming unglued, and Kristoffer Joner anchors the descent with a performance that feels raw, human, and increasingly cornered. The vibe is intimate and unnerving rather than loud, leaning into erotic menace and psychological dread with a confidence that lingers after the credits. Fair warning: it’s explicitly sexual and deliberately uncomfortable at times, so it’s not for every mood—but if you like your horror smart, stylish, and destabilizing, this one gets under your skin.

Next Door wants to drag you into a paranoid, eroticized mind-maze where grief, desire, and manipulation blur until you can’t trust a single scene—and on that level, it’s stylish and often impressively acted. The problem is the script can feel a bit too pleased with its own tricks, so what’s meant to be unsettling can start to feel obvious, like you’re being steered rather than discovered. It also leans hard into explicit sexual and sadomasochistic material and bursts of violence, which may read as provocative rather than meaningful if you’re not on its wavelength. If you enjoy slick psychological thrillers with grimy atmosphere and don’t mind an ending that many found frustrating (and potentially sour in its implications), you might get something out of it; otherwise, it’s likely to feel like a nasty puzzle with an undercooked payoff.
