Love and Other Disasters (2006)
Flighty Emily "Jacks" Jackson works for the British edition of Vogue magazine. Rather than pursue a relationship, Jacks regularly hooks up with her devoted ex-boyfriend, James Wildstone, and lives with Peter Simon, a gay screenwriter. When Jacks meets Argentinian photographer's assistant Paolo Sarmiento, she assumes he is gay and tries to bring him and Peter together, unaware that Paolo is straight and in love with her.
What people think about Love and Other Disasters
Love and Other Disasters is the kind of romantic comedy that doesn’t pretend to reinvent the genre—it simply reminds you why it’s fun in the first place, buoyed by Brittany Murphy’s irresistibly sparkly presence and a London fashion-world backdrop that feels like a glossy magazine come to life. The movie’s charm comes from its breezy confidence: quick, witty dialogue, playful misunderstandings, and a warm affection for its messy, well-meaning characters as they ricochet between bad timing and worse assumptions. It’s lighthearted in the best way, the sort of easywatch that still lands its jokes and keeps a pleasant little hum of sweetness underneath the chaos. If you’re looking for realism or deep emotional excavation, this may feel like a fluffy “guilty pleasure,” but if you want something funny, romantic, and effortlessly entertaining, it’s a delightful pick.
Love and Other Disasters wants to be a glossy, fast-talking London rom-com with fashion-world sparkle and a merry-go-round of mistaken assumptions. The problem is it rarely rises above the most familiar genre beats, so the misunderstandings and love-triangle chaos feel more mechanical than charming, and the tone can swing from cute to grating without warning. If you’re hoping for sharp jokes, emotional payoff, or characters who feel like real people, this may test your patience. If, however, you can enjoy a lightweight, style-forward comfort watch where the predictability is part of the deal, there’s enough breezy energy and attractive scenery to get you through.
