Wonder Woman (2017)

What makes Wonder Woman special is how unapologetically sincere it is: a superhero film that believes in courage, compassion, and the power of choosing to do the right thing, and makes that belief feel thrilling rather than corny. Patty Jenkins directs with a clear-eyed sense of wonder and momentum, staging action that’s spectacular but always rooted in character, while Gal Gadot’s Diana radiates charisma—part warrior, part idealist, entirely magnetic. Set against the soot-and-stakes backdrop of World War I, the movie carries an adventurous, mythic sweep with a surprisingly human heartbeat, helped along by the warm, witty chemistry with Chris Pine. If you prefer your comic-book stories drenched in cynicism, it may feel a little earnest—but if you’ve been waiting for a DC film that soars on pure heroic spirit, this is the one.

Wonder Woman is clearly aiming to be a bright, earnest origin story with a mythic hero dropped into the ugliness of World War I, and when it leans into Diana’s compassion and conviction, it genuinely works. The problem is it still trips over familiar superhero baggage: the villains are thinly sketched, the exposition can feel like it’s stopping the movie to explain itself, and the pacing wobbles as it tries to unify romance, war drama, and fantasy spectacle. If you need tight plotting and a truly memorable antagonist, you may find the final stretch more noisy than satisfying. Still, Gal Gadot’s presence and the chemistry with Chris Pine give it enough charm and sincerity to be worth it for viewers who want a hopeful, character-forward blockbuster rather than a perfectly streamlined one.
