Hancock (2008)

Hancock is what happens when a superhero movie stops pretending saving the day is clean, and finds real charm in the mess: it’s funny, bruised, and unexpectedly human, with Will Smith leaning into a prickly, self-sabotaging antihero who still can’t help but do the right thing. Peter Berg keeps the energy high with punchy action and slick effects, but the real hook is watching the PR makeover collide with a story that’s willing to swerve into darker, more emotional territory than you’d expect. Jason Bateman brings grounded warmth as the guy trying to sell the world on a better Hancock, while Charlize Theron adds a charged, intriguing presence that shifts the movie’s vibe in interesting ways. It’s not for everyone—its humor can be sharp, the violence and language are strong, and the tonal pivots are bold—but if you want a superhero film that feels original and a little risky, this one goes down easy.

Hancock wants to be a clever twist on the superhero movie: a damaged, unpopular “hero” getting a PR makeover while the action stays loud and chaotic. The problem is it starts with a sharp, funny premise and then swerves hard into heavier mythology and melodrama, and the tonal whiplash can make the second half feel like a different, messier film. Will Smith’s charisma and a few genuinely entertaining set pieces do a lot of the heavy lifting, but the pacing and storytelling get uneven once the backstory takes over. If you’re after a consistent action-comedy or a tightly written superhero arc, this may frustrate you; if you can roll with a weird genre left turn and enjoy the cast, it’s still an easy enough watch.
