Nightwatching (2007)
An extravagant, exotic and moving look at Rembrandt's romantic and professional life, and the controversy he created by the identification of a murderer in the painting The Night Watch.
What people think about Nightwatching
Nightwatching is special because it doesn’t just dramatize Rembrandt’s life—it tries to see the world the way he painted it, with frames lit like old-master canvases and compositions that feel deliberately, almost seductively arranged. Peter Greenaway turns art history into a simmering mystery, where ambition, desire, and public reputation hang in the air like oil paint not yet dry, and Martin Freeman gives Rembrandt a lived-in humanity that keeps the stylization from turning cold. The vibe is lush, cerebral, and a little provocative, more like stepping into a gallery after hours than settling in for a conventional period biopic. It’s not for viewers who want straightforward storytelling or who’d rather avoid explicit sexual content and strong language, but if you’re tempted by intelligent, visually ravishing cinema that treats artists as complicated people—not marble icons—this one is worth the plunge.
Nightwatching is clearly trying to be a lush, brainy riff on Rembrandt’s life and the hidden politics supposedly encoded in The Night Watch, and Peter Greenaway commits hard to that idea with pageant-like visuals and theatrical staging. The problem is it often feels more like an art lecture performed on an ornate set than a drama you can sink into, with a didactic, stylized approach that can come off ponderous and a bit muddled despite the intrigue. If you want a straightforward historical biopic or a clean conspiracy thriller, this will likely test your patience, and the R-rated sexual content and nudity aren’t exactly subtle. But if you enjoy dense, talky, highly composed cinema that treats history as a canvas for provocation rather than comfort, there’s enough visual ambition and intellectual mischief here to justify the runtime.
