Blades of Glory (2007)
When a much-publicized ice-skating scandal strips them of their gold medals, two world-class athletes skirt their way back onto the ice via a loophole that allows them to compete together as a pairs team.
What people think about Blades of Glory
Blades of Glory is the kind of full-commitment comedy that takes a ridiculous premise—two bitter, mismatched skating rivals forced into a pairs team—and spins it into a surprisingly graceful engine for nonstop laughs. Will Ferrell and Jon Heder click like sparring magnets, turning every glare, pratfall, and awkward moment of teamwork into something both mean-spiritedly funny and oddly endearing, while the movie skewers the self-serious pageantry of competitive skating with gleeful absurdity. The vibe is broad, brash, and proudly cartoonish, with set pieces that build like a sporting event you can’t believe you’re cheering for. It’s not for anyone who prefers their comedy subtle or clean, but if you’re on the fence and want a film that keeps escalating its silliness without losing momentum, this one earns its gold.
Blades of Glory is trying to mash up sports-movie underdog beats with shameless, over-the-top absurdity, and it does deliver a few genuinely funny set pieces thanks to Ferrell and Heder leaning hard into their mismatched egos. The problem is the movie basically runs on one gag—two idiot rivals forced to team up—and it stretches that premise until the plot starts to feel like a checklist of obvious sabotages, reconciliations, and big-final-performance beats. The humor is very broad and pretty crude, with plenty of cartoon violence and sexual jokes, so if that isn’t your lane, this will feel loud rather than clever. If you like silly 2000s studio comedies and can live with a thin, formulaic story, you’ll probably have a good time; if you want sharp writing or fresh comedy ideas, you may want to skate past it.
