Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck are excellent, and the cinematography is genuinely gorgeous, but the emotional temperature can feel chilly and the mournful tone rarely lets up. If you want momentum, catharsis, or a rousing outlaw thriller, this will likely test your patience; if you’re up for a hypnotic, melancholy character study, it’s one of the genre’s most distinctive.
