Killshot (2008)

Killshot has the lean, mean pull of a thriller that doesn’t waste time showing off—it just tightens the screws and lets great actors do the heavy lifting. John Madden stages the cat-and-mouse tension with a grounded, blue-collar grit, and the film’s best surprise is how human it feels even when the danger turns feral. Mickey Rourke is hypnotic as Blackbird, a killer with a weary professionalism you can’t quite look away from, while Diane Lane and Thomas Jane make the couple at the center feel like real people scrambling to stay intact under pressure. It is undeniably nasty in spots—this is an R-rated crime story with cruelty and hard edges—so it’s not for everyone, but if you want a watchable, performance-driven thriller that keeps its pulse up, it delivers.

Killshot is clearly aiming for a gritty, cat-and-mouse crime thriller about ordinary people getting swallowed by professional violence, and on paper the cast suggests it should crackle. In practice, it often feels oddly flat and unfocused, with scenes that should build dread instead drifting by, like the movie can’t decide whether it wants to be a pulpy chase film or a grounded character drama. Mickey Rourke brings some offbeat menace and Diane Lane gives the material more humanity than it deserves, but the pacing and direction are too tepid to fully capitalize on either. If you want a sharp, tightly wound thriller, this may test your patience; if you’re fine with a slow-burn, uneven crime story carried more by performances than momentum, you might get enough out of it.
