The Condemned (2007)
Jack Conrad is awaiting the death penalty in a corrupt Central American prison. He is "purchased" by a wealthy television producer and taken to a desolate island where he must fight to the death against nine other condemned killers from all corners of the world, with freedom going to the sole survivor.
What people think about The Condemned
The Condemned is the kind of gleefully nasty, high-concept action thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go: a death-match on a remote island, staged as a pay-per-view reality spectacle, where the movie’s mean streak is matched by a surprisingly pointed jab at our appetite for “content.” Scott Wiper keeps the pace muscular and the tone unapologetically B-movie—loud, sweaty, and just self-aware enough—while Steve Austin sells Jack Conrad as more than a walking fist, a bruiser with a flicker of conscience amid the carnage. Vinnie Jones adds a perfect shot of menace, and the whole thing plays like Con Air filtered through a cynical internet-age circus. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to cheesy excess, but if you want a ruthless, energetic ride with a satirical edge, it scratches that itch hard.
The Condemned is clearly aiming for a savage, anti-reality-TV satire wrapped in a simple last-man-standing survival brawl, and it commits to that grindhouse premise without blinking. The problem is it leans so hard on repetitive brutality that the tension starts to feel mechanical, and the “message” about exploitation comes off a bit hypocritical when the movie is also selling the carnage as the main attraction. Steve Austin and Vinnie Jones bring the right bruiser energy, and there are a few satisfyingly nasty action beats, but don’t expect nuanced characters or a story that does much more than move you to the next kill. If you’re not in the mood for bleak, mean-spirited violence with only a thin layer of commentary, this one will feel like a long 90 minutes.
