Autopsy (2008)

Autopsy (2008) is the kind of mean-spirited, old-school splatter thriller that doesn’t flirt with its premise—it grabs you by the collar and drags you into a nightmare-lit hospital where every hallway feels wrong and every “treatment” comes with a shiver. Adam Gierasch stages his shocks with real showman’s energy, building set pieces that escalate from uneasy to grotesquely unforgettable, helped along by grimy visuals and a score that keeps your nerves tuned tight. Robert Patrick brings a cold authority that makes the menace feel chillingly procedural, as if the horror is just part of the shift schedule. It’s absolutely not for the squeamish or anyone looking for subtle, psychological dread, but if you miss horror that proudly rolls up its sleeves and delivers the goods, this one earns its title.

Autopsy (2008) is clearly aiming for grimy, backwoods medical horror with a “wrong hospital, worse doctor” vibe, and it does deliver a few nasty, claustrophobic set pieces that know how to press your buttons. The problem is the film leans hard on a familiar, predictable framework, and the logic gaps pile up fast enough that you may stop feeling scared and start feeling annoyed. Performances are uneven, and once it hits the later stretch, the focus wobbles as if the movie isn’t sure which kind of horror story it wants to be. If you love sleazy B-movie brutality and can forgive dumb decisions for the sake of gore and atmosphere, you’ll get something out of it; if you need tight plotting and smart characters, this will test your patience.
