Volver (2006)
Three generations of women deal with family secrets while surviving the east wind, fire, insanity, superstition, lies and even death.
What people think about Volver
Volver is special because it makes the messy, complicated weight of family feel like something you can laugh at, cry over, and still find warmth inside—often in the very same scene. Pedro Almodóvar wraps a working-class Madrid world in saturated color and gentle, ghostly whimsy, then lets Penélope Cruz and a magnificent ensemble fill it with characters who breathe, bicker, hustle, and love like real people. The tone is a delicious balancing act: part neighborly comedy, part soap-operatic catharsis, part quiet supernatural shiver, all carried by storytelling that’s confident enough to be playful and compassionate enough to be honest. It isn’t for viewers who want their dramas tidy—this one deals with dark, adult themes—but if you’re open to a film that finds resilience and tenderness in the middle of life’s worst surprises, Volver is a deeply satisfying watch.
Volver is Almodóvar aiming for a warm, female-led blend of domestic comedy and melodrama, where everyday life in Madrid brushes up against grief, guilt, and the kind of “maybe it’s a ghost, maybe it’s just family” magic. The problem is that its big secrets and reveals are handled with unusual restraint, so if you’re expecting his most outrageous, propulsive work, the pacing can feel muted and the payoff oddly gentle rather than jaw-dropping. It also deals with attempted sexual assault and long-buried abuse, and while it’s not lurid, the tonal mix can be uncomfortable if you want your comedy and drama kept in separate boxes. Still, the performances—especially Penélope Cruz—and the lived-in atmosphere are strong enough that if you like character-first storytelling and emotional reconciliation more than plot fireworks, it’s worth your time.
