Director William Brent Bell keeps the vibe brisk and pulpy, mixing creepy folklore, glossy jump-scare energy, and that era’s tech paranoia into something that plays like a campfire story told in a LAN party. It’s not “elevated horror,” and it won’t convert viewers who want subtle dread over loud shocks, but if you’re on the fence and craving an easy, entertaining ride with a killer premise and a fun cast, this one goes down smooth. Put it on with friends, lights low, and let it be exactly what it is: a slick, spooky popcorn movie that knows how to push your buttons.

Stay Alive is clearly trying to mash up early-2000s teen horror with a “what if the game kills you in real life?” hook, and the Elizabeth Bathory angle gives it a fun, pulpy myth to hang everything on. The problem is it plays like a routine slasher with a video-game skin: the rules are shaky, the scares lean more on loud stings than dread, and the cast often reacts like they’re mildly inconvenienced instead of terrified. If you’re expecting clever game mechanics, real suspense, or performances that sell the panic, this will probably feel flat and dated. If you can settle for a campy, fast-moving time capsule with a couple of spooky visuals and an easy premise, it can work as background horror with friends.
