The screenplay is taut and surprisingly classy for material this dark, finding tension in glances, bargains, and the dread of what someone might be capable of when cornered. It is definitely not for everyone—there’s R-rated violence and sexual content—but if you like thrillers that simmer, twist, and leave you thinking about who’s really holding the leash, this one rewards your patience.

Restraint wants to be a tense, three-hander thriller about two desperate lovers and the “safe” hostage who may be the most dangerous person in the room, with a classy, secluded-estate vibe and a steady drip of psychological manipulation. The problem is it often confuses nastiness for suspense, leaning on cruelty, sexual power games, and shock beats more than genuinely clever plotting, so the tension can feel grim rather than gripping. If you’re sensitive to coercive sexual situations, animal harm, or violence that’s more mean-spirited than cathartic, this is one to skip because it doesn’t offer much emotional release. That said, the small cast keeps it watchable and there are a few effective, claustrophobic moments, but it’s best approached as a bleak, sleazy chamber thriller rather than a satisfying cat-and-mouse ride.
