Role Models (2008)

Role Models is the kind of raunchy studio comedy that sneaks up on you: it’s loud, shameless, and consistently funny, but it also has a surprisingly big heart beating under the dirty jokes. David Wain keeps the pace snappy and the tone playfully unhinged, while Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott make their screwups oddly lovable—guys you want to shake, but can’t help rooting for once they’re forced to show up for someone besides themselves. The movie’s secret weapon is how it treats its kids (especially the gloriously nerdy LARP-obsessed one) not as punchlines, but as people with real feelings and fierce little worlds worth defending. If crude humor and R-rated language aren’t your thing, this won’t convert you—but if you can roll with the vulgarity, you’ll get a comedy that’s sharper, sweeter, and more rewatchable than it has any right to be.

Role Models wants to be a raunchy redemption comedy where two burned-out man-children accidentally stumble into being decent mentors, and to its credit the cast’s chemistry and the nerdy LARP subplot deliver plenty of genuinely funny moments. The problem is the story is basically a clothesline for crude jokes, with a thin, pretty predictable arc that hits its beats right on schedule. If you don’t enjoy R-rated humor heavy on profanity, sexual gags, and juvenile behavior played for laughs, this will feel more exhausting than edgy. But if you’re in the mood for an easy, quote-y comedy with a surprisingly sweet core under the trash talk, it does the job without pretending it’s deeper than it is.
