Suburban Girl (2007)

Suburban Girl is a small, smartly dressed New York romance that sneaks up on you with how tender and human it is, less a fairy tale than a gently bruised coming-of-age story. Sarah Michelle Gellar gives Brett an appealing mix of ambition and insecurity, and when Alec Baldwin enters as the older, complicated Archie, the movie finds its pulse in their surprisingly warm chemistry—funny, a little messy, and often disarmingly sincere. Suburban Girl is clearly aiming for a glossy, grown-up romance about finding your voice in a cutthroat publishing world, with a mentor-lover dynamic meant to feel bittersweet and “literary.” The problem is it never fully commits to being funny, romantic, or dramatic, so the tone wobbles and the big emotional beats can feel more like plot points than earned moments. Sarah Michelle Gellar is likable and Alec Baldwin brings some lived-in charisma, but the relationship often plays more uncomfortable than charming, and the film’s idea of sophistication can come off as a little self-impressed.
