The Grand (2007)

The Grand is a scruffy little comedy that feels like you’ve been dropped into a high-stakes poker room where every table has its own lunatic philosophy of winning, and the fun is watching the egos, tics, and bad habits collide. Shot in that loose, mockumentary-adjacent style and powered by improvisation, it lets a terrific ensemble—Woody Harrelson’s charmingly frayed gambler, Dennis Farina’s old-school Vegas shark, and Werner Herzog’s gloriously unhinged wild card—find laughs in the pauses, the side-eyes, and the petty mind games as much as the punchlines. The vibe is shaggy and offbeat rather than tightly plotted, so if you need a clean, scripted comedy it may feel uneven, but if you like the human circus of Best in Show-style humor and don’t mind some R-rated roughness, it’s the kind of movie that lands enough genuinely funny moments to leave you smiling.

The Grand is clearly aiming for that loose, improv-heavy mockumentary vibe of Best in Show, dropping a bunch of eccentric poker personalities into a high-stakes tournament and letting the cast riff. When it clicks, you get a few genuinely funny character moments (Herzog’s deadpan weirdness is a highlight), but the movie’s biggest gamble is also its problem: the structure feels wobbly, scenes meander, and a lot of the jokes land with a thud rather than a punch. If you’re not already into poker culture or you need a comedy with tight setups and payoffs, this can feel like watching people improvise until something happens. Worth a try if you like shaggy, semi-scripted ensemble comedies and don’t mind R-rated language and drug bits, but don’t expect a consistently sharp satire.
