Thank You for Smoking (2005)
Nick Naylor is a charismatic spin-doctor for Big Tobacco who'll fight to protect America's right to smoke -- even if it kills him -- while still remaining a role model for his 12-year old son. When he incurs the wrath of a senator bent on snuffing out cigarettes, Nick's powers of "filtering the truth" will be put to the test.
What people think about Thank You for Smoking
Thank You for Smoking is the rare comedy that makes you laugh while it quietly sharpens your mind, turning the art of persuasion into a dazzling spectator sport. Aaron Eckhart is terrific as Nick Naylor—smooth, smug, and weirdly charming—anchoring a film whose wit lands like perfectly aimed darts, never needing to shout to make its point. The vibe is slick and conversational, a smart satire that glides through moral gray areas with enough elegance to keep you entertained even as it nudges you to question what you’re hearing. If you prefer your comedies broad and cuddly, this might feel a bit too sharp-toothed, but if you enjoy clever writing and fearless humor, it’s an easy yes.
Thank You for Smoking is aiming for a slick, talky satire about spin, persuasion, and the uncomfortable charm of a guy selling something indefensible. The problem is it can feel more like a string of clever scenes than a story with real momentum, and the emotional through-line (especially the redemption angle) is a bit vague and tidy. If you want sharp, angry satire that really digs the knife in, you may find it superficial and too pleased with its own jokes. But if you’re happy to watch a charismatic lead (and some genuinely funny dialogue) glide through moral gray areas without the movie demanding much from you, it can still be an entertaining ride.
