Hairspray (2007)

Hairspray is the kind of movie musical that doesn’t just invite you to tap your foot—it practically dares you not to grin, bursting with candy-colored 1960s style, big choreography, and songs that feel like pure sunshine. What makes it special is how that exuberance carries real heart: beneath the hairspray and high kicks is a warm, crowd-pleasing story about belonging, first love, and using newfound spotlight to push back against segregation. Nikki Blonsky is disarmingly lovable at the center, while the ensemble (including a gloriously game John Travolta and a deliciously icy Michelle Pfeiffer) turns every scene into a little celebration. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to earnest, full-throttle musical cheer, but if you want a feel-good film with bite-sized social conscience and nonstop momentum, this one lands like a standing ovation.

Hairspray (2007) is aiming to be a big-hearted, candy-colored crowd-pleaser that wraps a civil-rights message inside a feel-good teen musical, and on that level it mostly delivers. The catch is it’s so polished and eager to charm that it can feel a bit conventional and even garish, sanding down the sharper, weirder edge some people expect from the John Waters roots. If you’re not into upbeat Broadway-style numbers, broad comedy, or a simplified, tidy approach to serious themes like racism and body image, this may come off as “pleasant” rather than truly electric. Still, the cast commits, the energy is high, and when the music hits, it’s hard not to enjoy at least parts of the ride.
