Superhero Movie (2008)

Superhero Movie is the kind of spoof that actually remembers the most important rule of parody: you need real momentum, not just random references, and it keeps a surprisingly steady stream of laughs as it ricochets through teen angst, comic-book clichés, and sci-fi silliness. Drake Bell plays Rick Riker with an endearing, dweeby sincerity that makes the absurdity land, while Christopher McDonald commits to Hourglass with the straight-faced gusto of a villain who knows he’s in a joke and dares you not to laugh. The vibe is loud, gleefully stupid in places, and occasionally sharper than you’d expect from the genre—more “tolerable” than the average mid-2000s spoof because it’s often aiming at the structure of superhero stories, not just their surface. It’s not for everyone, especially if crude sexual gags and moderate profanity are dealbreakers, but if you want a breezy, goofy antidote to self-serious capes, this one earns its cheap shots more often than it misses.

Superhero Movie is trying to be a fast, dumb-as-a-rock parody of Spider-Man and the early-2000s superhero boom, with Drake Bell playing the likable goof who stumbles into powers and chaos. The problem is it mostly settles for obvious references, recycled spoof beats, and shock-value sex jokes that feel more desperate than clever, so if you’re hoping for sharp satire you’ll probably be checking your watch. Craig Mazin keeps the pace moving and Christopher McDonald commits harder than the material deserves, which can make it a passable background comedy if your bar is “a few cheap laughs.” If crude gags, moderate profanity, and a lot of juvenile humor aren’t your thing, this one won’t convert you—it’s for viewers who enjoy broad, dated parody and don’t mind that the jokes are often the whole point.
