Director Takashi Miike turns Japanese folklore into a bustling carnival of creatures—some adorable, some grotesque, all unforgettable—brought to life with vibrant visuals and gleefully tactile effects that feel like a kid’s fever dream rendered in neon and smoke. The tone is playful and adventurous, but it’s anchored by a lonely young hero whose journey gives the spectacle something human to hold onto. If you’re allergic to whimsy or prefer your fantasy sleek and serious, it may feel proudly strange, but if you want a unique, imaginative ride that’s as entertaining as it is visually sumptuous, this is a treasure.

The Great Yokai War is clearly trying to be a kid-friendly fantasy adventure with Miike’s oddball imagination splashed all over it, turning Japanese folklore into a colorful “chosen one” quest. The problem is it often feels like a parade of kooky creatures in search of a story, with pacing that lurches around and a plot that can come off scattered or half-baked. The CGI and action are very of-their-time and sometimes distractingly rough, and if you’re not charmed by the young lead, the film can test your patience. Still, there’s a sincere, playful spirit and some genuinely fun yōkai designs—just don’t go in expecting tight storytelling or peak Miike intensity.
