Run Fatboy Run (2007)

Run Fatboy Run is the kind of romantic comedy that wins you over not with slick perfection, but with scruffy, big-hearted effort—much like its hero. Simon Pegg turns Dennis into a lovable mess you can’t help rooting for, mining real humor from embarrassment and small victories while keeping the emotions grounded enough to matter. David Schwimmer’s direction has an easy, crowd-pleasing rhythm, balancing London’s everyday texture with a buoyant, underdog vibe that makes the whole movie feel like a warm jog you didn’t expect to enjoy. It does follow a familiar rom-com track and leans into some broad gags, so it won’t convert cynics, but if you’re on the fence and want something charming, funny, and surprisingly sincere, it’s a very easy “press play.”

Run Fatboy Run is trying to be a sweet underdog rom-com about a guy redeeming himself the hard way, with a marathon standing in for emotional growing up. The problem is it rarely surprises you: the beats are familiar, the jokes can feel soft, and the story coasts on clichés rather than finding a sharper angle for Simon Pegg to really shine. If you’re expecting the bite and inventiveness of Pegg’s best work, or a romance with real complexity, this may feel bland and overly predictable.
