Like Minds (2006)

Like Minds is a deliciously unnerving boarding-school thriller that doesn’t just ask who did it, but how belief and obsession can turn intelligence into a weapon. Gregory J. Read stages the story like a psychological chess match between a coolly guarded suspect and the forensic psychologist trying to read the truth behind his charm, and the film’s eerie atmosphere lingers like a bad dream you can’t quite shake. It’s also a terrific early showcase for Eddie Redmayne, who makes privilege, fear, and calculation flicker across his face in ways that keep you leaning in, while Tom Sturridge brings a hypnotic menace that feels both theatrical and disturbingly intimate. Fair warning: the movie’s dark ideas and macabre imagery aren’t for everyone, but if you like mysteries that seduce you with intelligence and then quietly tighten the screws, this one is absolutely worth the trip.

Like Minds wants to be a classy, unsettling psychological thriller about adolescent privilege, obsession, and how belief can rot into violence, and you can feel the ambition in its boarding-school moodiness and the committed performances (especially an early, intense Eddie Redmayne and a reliably grounded Toni Collette). The problem is it gradually trades tension for “look how twisted this is” escalation, and the plot starts to feel murky and implausible rather than cleverly mysterious. If you need your mysteries to play fair and your psychological logic to hold together, the second half may have you rolling your eyes instead of gripping the armrest. But if you’re in the mood for a dark, gothic vibe piece where atmosphere and taboo themes matter more than coherence, it can still scratch that itch.
