Employee of the Month (2006)
When he hears that the new female employee digs ambitious men who are the store employee of the month, a slacker gets his act together but finds himself in competition with his rival, an ambitious co-worker.
What people think about Employee of the Month
Employee of the Month is a cheerfully low-stakes underdog comedy that finds surprising mileage in a place most movies ignore: the fluorescent battleground of a big-box store where pride, petty power, and romance all get scanned at the register. It’s predictable in the way comfort food is predictable, but the pacing keeps it moving and the movie has an affectionate eye for workplace weirdos, small victories, and the absurd seriousness people bring to meaningless titles. Dane Cook’s slacker-to-striver arc is easy to root for, Jessica Simpson gives the story a steady romantic center, and Dax Shepard nearly steals the film by playing the kind of smug rival you can’t wait to see get knocked down a peg. If PG-13 crude humor and early-2000s vibes aren’t your thing, it may not convert you, but if you want something light, breezy, and reliably amusing, this one goes down easy.
Employee of the Month is aiming for a light, underdog workplace rom-com with a competitive “prove yourself” hook set in big-box retail, and you can see the movie it wants to be. The problem is the humor leans heavily on mid-2000s crude jokes and obvious setups, and when the laughs don’t land, the pacing starts to feel like you’re stuck in a long shift with people trying too hard to be funny. Dane Cook’s loud, high-energy persona and Dax Shepard’s smug rival act will work only if you already like that style, while the romance is more a prize to be won than something that feels earned. If you want a breezy, disposable comedy with a few decent one-liners and a familiar arc, it’ll do; if you’re hoping for sharp satire, believable chemistry, or consistent laughs, your time is probably better spent elsewhere.
