Candy (2006)

Candy is special because it treats addiction not as a sensational plot engine, but as a tragic love story told with aching intimacy and lyrical clarity. Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish don’t just play lovers circling a drug; they make you feel the gravity of two people who can’t tell where desire ends and dependency begins, their chemistry bright enough to be believable even when everything turns dark. Neil Armfield directs with a calm, restrained hand that refuses easy melodrama, letting the emotional force land quietly and then linger—romantic, raw, and increasingly bruising in tone. It’s not an easy watch and it won’t be for everyone, but if you want a drama that’s honest about how love can both save and sabotage, Candy is hauntingly worth your time.

Candy is clearly aiming for a tragic, poetic romance that charts addiction as a love story turned slow-motion car crash, and it commits to that bleakness without flinching. The problem is it often leans on familiar heroin-drama beats and heightened misery, so if you’re allergic to melodrama or want fresh insight rather than another descent-into-hell arc, it may feel predictable and emotionally manipulative. Dan and Candy can also come off as intensely self-absorbed, which makes it harder to invest if you need characters who grow in a way that feels earned. That said, Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish bring real intensity, and the film’s “Heaven/Earth/Hell” structure gives it a grim, lyrical momentum—just don’t go in expecting subtlety or catharsis.
