Balls of Fury (2007)

Balls of Fury is the kind of shamelessly goofy comedy that commits so hard to its own nonsense that you can’t help but admire the follow-through: a ping-pong movie played like a faux–martial-arts showdown, with crime-movie trimmings and a grin on its face the whole time. Dan Fogler makes Randy Daytona an underdog you actually want to root for, and Christopher Walken, deadpan as ever, treats every ridiculous moment like it’s Shakespeare—which somehow makes it funnier. The vibe is loud, broad, and cheerfully juvenile, with PG-13 crudity and cartoony peril that keeps the pace zipping along like a rally you don’t want to end. It’s not for anyone allergic to dumb jokes or high-concept silliness, but if you’re in the mood for “sheer absurdity” delivered with surprising goodwill, this one earns its laughs.

Balls of Fury is trying to be a goofy, kung-fu spoof wrapped around ping-pong, with a dash of crime-movie silliness and Christopher Walken doing his trademark weirdness. The problem is it basically has one joke—“isn’t this ridiculous?”—and it stretches that thin premise for a full runtime, so the gags start feeling repetitive and the pacing goes flat.
