Clerks II is clearly trying to take Kevin Smith’s slacker-chatter formula and give it a bigger, warmer “growing up” arc, with Dante and Randall stumbling into adulthood via fast-food purgatory. The problem is it often feels like it’s shouting where the original just talked: the gross-out bits can be icky and overextended, the pacing drifts, and the emotional turns can land a little awkwardly melodramatic.
