Hemingway & Gellhorn is the kind of grown-up romantic drama that feels big in every sense: sweeping across wars, newsrooms, and glittering salons while keeping its focus on two fiercely talented people colliding at full speed. Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen share an incandescent chemistry, and Kidman’s Martha Gellhorn, all steel and spark, refuses to be reduced to a footnote in anyone else’s legend. The film’s epic scope and polished craft give the story a handsome, old-Hollywood grandeur, even when it occasionally leans into a bit of corniness in its mythmaking. Hemingway & Gellhorn wants to be a sweeping, prestige romance set against war and literary legend, with big emotions and bigger personalities. The problem is it often plays like a glossy historical melodrama: the writing can be clunky, the characters feel sketched rather than lived-in, and the relationship beats land with a thud instead of a sting. If you’re hoping for sharp insight into two complicated writers, you may find it superficial and occasionally unfair, especially in how it flattens Hemingway into a near-caricature.
