Red Eye (2005)

Red Eye is the kind of lean, high-wire thriller that grabs you by the collar and never loosens its grip, turning the cramped cabin of an overnight flight into a pressure cooker where every glance and whispered word matters. Wes Craven’s direction is crisp and economical, building suspense with the steady confidence of a filmmaker who knows exactly how to make ordinary spaces feel dangerous. Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy give the movie its charge—she’s smart and resourceful, he’s disarmingly charming in a way that keeps you deliciously on edge—making the cat-and-mouse tension feel personal, not mechanical. If you prefer mysteries with lots of twists and sprawling conspiracies, this one’s more of a tightly wound ride, but for a brisk, clever jolt of entertainment, it’s first-class.

Red Eye is trying to be a tight, high-concept thriller that squeezes maximum tension out of a very ordinary setting, and for a while it absolutely works thanks to strong performances and a nasty little cat-and-mouse dynamic. The problem is the script doesn’t always earn its twists, and once it leaves the plane the pacing gets shakier, with a few plot holes and convenient choices that can feel a bit cheesy. If you need your thrillers to be airtight, surprising, and grounded, this may start to look predictable and flimsy in the second half. But if you’re happy with a brisk, pulpy ride that’s more about momentum than logic, it’s still an entertaining way to kill 85 minutes.
