Mr. Woodcock (2007)

Mr. Woodcock has a wickedly funny hook: what if the guy who made your adolescence miserable suddenly shows up as your mom’s perfect new fiancé—and you’re the only one who remembers the bruises to your pride? Craig Gillespie keeps the tone breezy and a little mean in that mid-2000s studio-comedy way, letting Billy Bob Thornton turn menace into deadpan charm while Seann William Scott plays the grown man who discovers self-help is easier to preach than practice. Susan Sarandon grounds the chaos with warmth, so the movie isn’t just a grudge match—it’s a rom-com collision of ego, nostalgia, and second chances. It won’t be for everyone if you’re allergic to crude jokes or characters behaving badly on purpose, but if you like your comedy fueled by embarrassment, rivalry, and a cast that knows exactly how to sell the bit, it’s an easy, watchable good time.

Mr. Woodcock is clearly aiming for a broad, crowd-pleasing rom-com built around the relatable nightmare of your mom dating the person who made your teenage years miserable. The problem is the movie leans hard on mean-spirited, juvenile set pieces and an uneven script, so the comedy often feels more awkward than sharp and the pacing never really finds a groove. Billy Bob Thornton at least commits to the role with a satisfyingly punchable presence, and Susan Sarandon brings some warmth, but the film wastes its cast by repeating the same rivalry beats instead of escalating cleverly. If you like loud, PG-13 crude humor and can tolerate a thin story in exchange for a few nasty laughs, you might coast through it; if you want smart timing, real romantic chemistry, or a premise that’s actually explored, this probably isn’t worth your time.
