In the Land of Women (2007)

In the Land of Women has a quietly disarming gift: it takes what could’ve been a standard post-breakup comedy and turns it into a tender, observant story about the messy ways people lean on each other when life stops being funny. Jon Kasdan keeps the tone warm and human—wry without being cruel—while Adam Brody gives Carter a likable, self-deprecating sincerity that makes his drift back toward adulthood feel earned, and Meg Ryan grounds the film with a performance that’s both vulnerable and steel-spined. The movie’s charm is in its small moments: conversations on porches, awkward honesty, and the sense that healing happens sideways, through neighbors and family and unexpected responsibilities. It’s not for viewers looking for big romantic fireworks or pure farce—this one brushes up against heavier themes—but if you want a gently touching dramedy with real emotional texture, it’s an easy film to fall into.

In the Land of Women is clearly aiming for a bittersweet, coming-of-age dramedy about heartbreak, family caretaking, and messy cross-generational connections, with a sprinkle of indie quirk. The problem is it often feels like it’s talking about big emotions rather than letting you feel them, so the cancer storyline, the romantic tension, and the “life lesson” beats can come off stilted and oddly weightless. A lot of the situations play like familiar indie-romcom templates, and the character choices can feel more convenient than believable, which makes it hard to fully invest. Still, if you like gentle, dialogue-driven movies and you’re mainly here for Adam Brody’s low-key charm (plus a young Kristen Stewart) and a soft, reflective mood, you may find it an easy watch—just don’t expect it to hit as deeply as it wants to.
