Flags of Our Fathers (2006)
There were five Marines and one Navy Corpsman photographed raising the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945. This is the story of three of the six surviving servicemen - John 'Doc' Bradley, Pvt. Rene Gagnon and Pvt. Ira Hayes - who fought in the battle to take Iwo Jima from the Japanese.
What people think about Flags of Our Fathers
Flags of Our Fathers is special because it looks past the iconic photograph and asks what it costs to turn real men into symbols, letting heroism feel complicated, human, and heartbreakingly earned. Clint Eastwood stages the Battle of Iwo Jima with a bruising realism that puts you in the smoke and chaos, but the film’s real power comes in the quieter aftermath—how fame, guilt, and grief cling to the survivors long after the guns fall silent. The tone is somber and reflective rather than rah-rah, a masterfully controlled war drama that treats history with gravity and empathy. It isn’t an easy watch, and if you want clean triumph it may frustrate you, but if you’re open to a film that honors sacrifice by refusing to romanticize it, this one stays with you.
Flags of Our Fathers is trying to do something admirable: strip the glory off an iconic photo and show how war, propaganda, and survivor’s guilt chew people up long after the battle ends. The problem is the storytelling leans heavily on flashbacks and non-chronological jumps that can feel choppy and oddly distant, so if you’re looking for a clear, character-driven war narrative, you may find yourself checking the time. It’s also more reflective than thrilling, with pacing that can feel unfocused rather than steadily building momentum. Still, Eastwood delivers stark battle sequences and a sober, unglamorous tone that will click if you want a grim meditation on mythmaking rather than a rousing WWII crowd-pleaser.
