Neverwas is clearly aiming for a tender, brain-bending drama about grief, mental illness, and the blurry line between imagination and reality, with a fairy-tale wrapper. The problem is it often feels like it’s pushing pieces into place rather than letting them land naturally, so the twists and “meaningful” connections can come off contrived instead of haunting. Ian McKellen brings real dignity and warmth to his role, and there are moments where the mood and production design create an inviting, storybook melancholy.
