Inside I’m Dancing is special because it treats disability not as a lesson or a label, but as the ground where a fierce, funny, life-hungry friendship takes root—and it does so with a mischievous grin and a full heart. Damien O’Donnell finds a tone that’s warmly irreverent without ever turning cruel, letting the story breathe with pub-night energy, sudden tenderness, and the quiet ache of wanting more than the world expects you to ask for. James McAvoy brings electric swagger to Rory, while Steven Robertson gives Michael a beautifully felt inner life that makes every step toward independence land with real emotional weight. It can hit hard, and it won’t be for viewers who prefer their dramas tidy and comfortable, but if you want something humane, funny, and genuinely uplifting, this one stays with you.

Inside I’m Dancing is clearly trying to be a rousing, human-scale story about independence, friendship, and the right to live on your own terms, and when it’s just two people bouncing off each other, it can be genuinely affecting. The problem is it often reaches for emotion with a sledgehammer: the plotting can feel familiar, the big beats are signposted a mile away, and the filmmaking occasionally has a rough, heavy-handed quality that makes the drama feel more manufactured than earned. If you’re sensitive to melodrama or dislike “inspirational” arcs that nudge into sentimentality, this may test your patience even if you agree with everything it stands for. But if you can tolerate some formula in exchange for strong performances and a warm core, it still has enough heart to land.
