Cake (2005)

Cake is the kind of breezy romantic comedy that wins you over less with grand surprises than with sheer likability: it’s warm, slightly cheeky, and carried on the shoulders of performers who know how to make even familiar beats feel lived-in. Heather Graham gives Pippa an easy charm that makes her commitment-phobic attitude more endearing than abrasive, while Taye Diggs brings a playful spark and David Sutcliffe supplies the steadier, slow-burn counterbalance. Director Nisha Ganatra keeps the vibe light and conversational, with supporting turns (including Sandra Oh and Cheryl Hines) popping in like welcome guests at a party, and the movie lands enough scattered chuckles to keep the mood buoyant. It’s not for viewers craving a bold reinvention of the genre—and it is R-rated for some sexual content and language—but if you want a relaxed, charismatic rom-com with a wedding-world backdrop and a gentle push toward grown-up feelings, this one goes down easy.

Cake is clearly aiming for a breezy, grown-up rom-com about a commitment-phobic woman being forced into the wedding industry and learning to open up, and that setup could have been a fun bit of irony.
