Delirious (2007)

Delirious is one of those rare showbiz satires that’s sharp enough to sting and humane enough to leave a bruise you recognize as your own, turning the flashbulb frenzy of celebrity culture into something both funny and quietly sad. Tom DiCillo keeps the movie buzzing with New York energy while letting the story breathe into a surprisingly tender, messy bond between a desperate paparazzo and the drifter he takes under his wing. Steve Buscemi is terrific here—itchy, insecure, and painfully alive—making a character you might judge at first feel uncomfortably sympathetic by the time the credits roll. It’s not a glossy rom-com and it can get seamy in its unflinching look at fame’s ecosystem, but if you like comedies with bite and dramas with a beating heart, this one earns your attention.

Delirious wants to be a sharp, sad-funny takedown of celebrity worship and the parasitic paparazzi economy, and you can feel Tom DiCillo aiming for something grimly human rather than cute. The problem is it often mistakes bitterness for insight, with tonal lurches and plot turns that can feel more irritating than revealing, especially when it pushes into harsher, meaner territory. If you’re hoping for a breezy comedy-romance or a clean redemption arc, this will likely leave you cold and a bit grimy. Still, Buscemi and Pitt keep it watchable, and when the film settles into its observational groove, it lands a few uncomfortable truths about ambition, insecurity, and the price of being seen.
