What makes it linger is how unflinchingly it holds two truths at once—the wonder of play and the horror of neglect—while Jodelle Ferland gives a performance so committed and strange-sweet you can’t look away. The tone is grotesque yet oddly lyrical, like a bedtime story told at the edge of a nightmare, with Gilliam’s visual invention constantly finding poetry in ruin. It’s absolutely not for everyone—its depictions of addiction, death, and taboo are confronting—but if you can meet it on its own unsettling wavelength, it’s a singular, ambitious film you’ll be thinking about long after it ends.

The problem is that the film asks you to sit with a lot of grim, uncomfortable material while presenting it through a whimsical lens that can feel less like daring art and more like a test of endurance. If you’re expecting a conventional thriller, a sympathetic drama, or anything resembling “dark but fun” fantasy, this will likely strike you as meandering, queasy, and emotionally punishing. That said, it’s undeniably distinctive, with Jodelle Ferland giving a fearless performance and Gilliam delivering unsettling, memorable imagery—just know the payoff is more discomfort than catharsis.
