Russian Dolls (2005)

Russian Dolls has that rare sequel magic: it doesn’t just “check in” on beloved characters, it lets you feel the years between reunions—the compromises, the bruised hopes, the new selves that don’t quite fit the old friendships. Cédric Klapisch directs with a breezy confidence, gliding from Paris to London to St. Petersburg with the ease of a great conversation, while the ensemble (Romain Duris, Kelly Reilly, Audrey Tautou and company) keeps everything warm, funny, and recognizably human. The tone is light on its feet but emotionally alert, the kind of romantic comedy-drama that can make you laugh at someone’s messiness and then quietly recognize your own. If you need big plot twists or grand declarations, it may feel too casual—but if you like smart, charming, lived-in stories about love, work, and the friendships that outlast your twenties, this one is an easy yes.

Russian Dolls is clearly trying to be a warm, grown-up check-in with the L’Auberge Espagnole crew, mixing romantic messiness with that breezy, pan-European “life is complicated” vibe. The problem is it often feels like a series of charming postcards and relationship detours rather than a story with real momentum, and if you didn’t already bond with these characters in the first film, it can come off lightweight and a bit long. Xavier’s indecision and the film’s flirtation-with-everyone structure may read as relatable to some, but to others it’ll feel repetitive and emotionally noncommittal. Still, there are sparks of wit, an appealing ensemble, and a few honest moments about growing up—just don’t expect a tight rom-com or a satisfying standalone payoff.
