The Departed (2006)
To take down South Boston's Irish Mafia, the police send in one of their own to infiltrate the underworld, not realizing the syndicate has done likewise. While an undercover cop curries favor with the mob kingpin, a career criminal rises through the police ranks. But both sides soon discover there's a mole among them.
What people think about The Departed
What makes The Departed special is the way Scorsese turns a familiar cops-and-criminals setup into a pressure cooker of identity, loyalty, and dread—every scene tightening the screws until you can practically hear the clock ticking. The filmmaking has that gritty, street-level authenticity, but it’s also wickedly entertaining, propelled by sharp dialogue, dark humor, and a pulse-racing sense that one wrong move will ruin everything. Leonardo DiCaprio brings raw, fraying intensity, Matt Damon plays cool calculation with a chilling ease, and Jack Nicholson looms over it all like a force of nature—messy, magnetic, and dangerous. It’s not for viewers who want clean heroes or gentle violence, but if you’re in the mood for a crime thriller that feels alive, morally thorny, and relentlessly gripping, this is one of the great modern ones.
Martin Scorsese is clearly aiming for a slick, high-stakes cat-and-mouse thriller where paranoia and double lives grind everyone down, and on that level it’s tense, propulsive, and packed with heavyweight performances. That said, if you’re expecting his most layered, soulful crime epic, this can feel more like a brutally efficient genre machine—loud, twisty, and sometimes more interested in shock and momentum than airtight logic. Some viewers also bounce off the “seen-it-before” undercover setup (especially if you know the Hong Kong original), and the story can ask you to overlook a few convenient turns. Watch it if you want sharp dialogue, anxiety, and swaggering star power; skip it if plot holes, derivative vibes, or “best-of-Scorsese” expectations are deal-breakers.
