Evilenko is the kind of true-crime thriller that doesn’t just aim to shock—it pulls you into a chilling, claustrophobic portrait of a society cracking at the seams, and a predator who thrives in the gaps. Malcolm McDowell delivers a fearless, unnerving performance that’s mesmerizing to watch, while Marton Csokas and Ronald Pickup give the story a steady, human counterweight as the pursuers trying to impose reason on nightmare. David Grieco stages the film with a grim, immediate intensity and a strong opening that grabs you by the collar and rarely lets go, creating an immersive dread rather than a tidy whodunit. Fair warning: it’s brutal and explicitly graphic, including violence against children, so it’s not for everyone—but if you can handle the darkness, it’s a potent, unsettling watch powered by acting and atmosphere.

Evilenko is clearly aiming for a grim, politically charged serial-killer drama that links one man’s brutality to the rot of a collapsing Soviet system, and on paper that’s a solid angle. The problem is it often plays like two different films fighting each other: a serious procedural with a profiler and investigator, and a lurid shocker that leans into sensational violence and some questionable “hypnotic powers” stuff that undercuts credibility. Pacing and writing can feel messy and uneven, and performances—especially the villain—veer into theatrical overacting when the material needs restraint. If you’re sensitive to explicit sexual violence (including against minors) or want a grounded true-crime thriller with tight storytelling, this is very likely not for you, though Malcolm McDowell’s sheer intensity and the bleak atmosphere may still appeal to viewers who can stomach the excess.
