The Wild (2006)
An adolescent lion is accidentally shipped from the New York Zoo to Africa. Now running free, his zoo pals must put aside their differences to help bring him back.
What people think about The Wild
The Wild is at its best when it treats a familiar “fish out of water” setup like a lively city-to-savanna roller coaster, powered by glossy, energetic animation and a surprisingly game voice cast. It zips from Central Park to Times Square to wide-open Africa with a breezy, joke-forward vibe, mixing slapstick, mild peril, and a warm father-son heartbeat that gives the adventure something to hang on to. Kiefer Sutherland brings an earnest, slightly bruised dignity to the lion dad, while Jim Belushi and Eddie Izzard keep the banter humming, so even the quieter stretches feel companionable. It’s not Pixar-deep and the humor can lean a bit crude for some tastes, but if you want a fast, colorful family romp with momentum, charm, and a solid final stretch, this one earns its stripes.
The Wild is clearly aiming for a fast, kid-friendly adventure about a dad and son reconnecting, with a big “believe in yourself” arc and lots of frantic animal sidekicks. The problem is it feels like a grab-bag of better animated movies, with a story that rarely surprises and humor that leans loud and pushy rather than genuinely clever. The animation and character work are serviceable but not the kind that will wow anyone, and the constant banter can grate if you’re sensitive to noisy, quippy comedy. If your family just wants a harmless, colorful time-waster with a few sweet moments and recognizable voice talent, it’ll do; if you’re hoping for originality, sharper wit, or top-tier animation, you’ll probably wish you picked something else.
