Explained

What people think about Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical

Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical is a gleefully wicked miracle of camp: a full-throated Broadway-style send-up of 1930s anti-marijuana hysteria that commits so hard to its joke it becomes genuinely, irresistibly entertaining. Andy Fickman stages the “cautionary tale” with bright, punchy musical numbers and a wink so big you can feel it, while Kristen Bell and Christian Campbell play their squeaky-clean sweethearts with just the right mix of sincerity and satire to keep the comedy buoyant. The vibe is knowingly outrageous—part burlesque, part vintage propaganda reel, part fever-dream showbiz—so the fun comes from watching it gleefully escalate, not from taking any of it at face value. It is, however, very much R-rated and proudly trashy in its innuendo and drug-soaked humor, so if you don’t enjoy bawdy musical comedy or deliberately over-the-top parody, you’ll want to steer clear; if you do, it’s a riot that earns its cult reputation.
