Little Children (2006)
The lives of two lovelorn spouses from separate marriages, a registered sex offender, and a disgraced ex-police officer intersect as they struggle to resist their vulnerabilities and temptations.
What people think about Little Children
Little Children is one of those rare dramas that looks at suburbia with a novelist’s eye and a surgeon’s precision—quietly funny, deeply sad, and uncomfortably true all at once. Todd Field turns park playdates, pool gossip, and dinner-party small talk into a pressure cooker of longing and self-deception, letting temptation and judgment ripple through a community in ways that feel eerily recognizable. Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson are terrific as two people grasping for air inside lives that don’t fit, while the film’s compassion extends even to the characters you’d least expect it to, without ever excusing them. It’s candid about sex and morally messy in a way that may not be for everyone, but if you want an adult, intelligent story that trusts you to sit with complexity, this one lingers.
Little Children is aiming for a sharp, adult look at suburban hypocrisy—sex, shame, and loneliness colliding in ways that feel deliberately uncomfortable. Todd Field directs with real craft and strong performances (Winslet and Wilson especially), but the film can come off a bit smug and heavy-handed, like it’s underlining its points with a thick marker rather than trusting you to get there. The tone swings between darkly comic and grimly tragic, and if you’re sensitive to a “snarky narrator” vibe or story beats that feel engineered instead of organic, you may find it cold or mechanical. It’s worth your time if you want messy, morally complicated drama with explicit sexual content and no easy catharsis—but it’s not the one if you’re looking for romance that’s tender, hopeful, or subtle.
