John Carter (2012)

John Carter is that rare big-budget adventure that actually feels like an adventure: a sun-baked, swooping, pulp-fueled ride that throws you onto an alien world and trusts you to keep up. Andrew Stanton paints Barsoom with vivid, storybook grandeur—towering cities, strange creatures, and wide-open vistas that make the spectacle feel tactile rather than noisy—while the action has a clean, old-school clarity that’s easy to enjoy. Beneath the swashbuckling surface, there’s a surprisingly earnest heartbeat about a worn-down man rediscovering purpose, and the film’s sincerity is part of its charm. It’s a little unabashedly classical in its heroics and mythology, so if you need constant irony or a wink at the camera it may not be your flavor, but if you miss straightforward, transportive sci-fi escapism, this one is a treat.

John Carter is clearly aiming for old-school, swashbuckling sci-fi spectacle, and when it leans into the pulp adventure vibe, the Martian world-building and sheer scale can be genuinely fun. The problem is it tells its story in a cluttered, overlong way, dumping names, factions, and lore faster than the characters (or the audience) can emotionally keep up. Taylor Kitsch has the look of a classic hero, but the characterization is thin enough that the big stakes often feel like homework instead of urgency. If you love dense mythology and don’t mind uneven pacing for the sake of a lavish, earnest throwback, you might enjoy it; if you need sharp plotting and strong character hooks, this one will test your patience.
