Josh Hartnett and Melissa George ground the terror with a scrappy, human urgency, and Danny Huston’s vampire leader brings a chilly, predatory intelligence that makes every scene feel like a hunt. It’s not for the squeamish or profanity-averse, but if you want a hard-edged, intensely atmospheric horror-thriller that actually feels different, this one earns its fangs.

30 Days of Night is clearly aiming for a simple, nasty survival-horror ride: take a great high-concept setting (a town trapped in a month of darkness) and squeeze it until it screams. When it’s clicking, David Slade delivers icy atmosphere, vicious vampire attacks, and a genuinely menacing villain in Danny Huston, with a few striking set pieces that make the premise feel worth the ticket. The problem is the movie’s human drama and dialogue often feel thin, and after the initial shock wears off the structure can start to feel repetitive, like it’s circling the same beats until it runs long. If you want smart character work or escalating twists, you may get bored; if you’re here for brutal, grimy horror with a killer hook and don’t mind a blunt, sometimes monotonous march of violence, it’ll do the job.
