Loverboy (2005)

Loverboy is the kind of intimate, unsettling drama that earns your attention by refusing to simplify its heroine, turning a taboo subject—maternal love that curdles into obsession—into a raw, human character study. Kevin Bacon directs with a quiet confidence, letting the period texture and everyday moments lull you into a fragile sense of normalcy while Kyra Sedgwick delivers a fearless performance that’s equal parts tender, desperate, and terrifyingly convincing. The film’s romance isn’t the sweep-you-off-your-feet kind; it’s the aching, complicated need for connection that can shape a life for better or worse, and young Dominic Scott Kay gives the story a beating heart. It’s not an easy watch, and the sexuality is explicit enough to justify the R rating, but if you’re drawn to psychologically rich dramas that linger in your mind, Loverboy is worth the trip.

Loverboy is clearly aiming for an intimate, psychological romance-drama about motherhood, loneliness, and the terrifying ways love can curdle into control, and Kyra Sedgwick commits hard enough to make you believe the character’s inner logic. The problem is the film’s awkward, flashback-heavy structure and sluggish pacing: it often feels like it’s circling its point instead of building momentum, so the emotional payoff can land muted rather than devastating. Emily is written and played as deeply unsettling, which may be the intent, but if you need a sympathetic lead to stay engaged, you’ll likely feel pushed away instead of pulled in. Worth a look if you’re drawn to uncomfortable character studies and can tolerate some sexual content, but if you want a sweeping romance or a cathartic drama, this may feel more draining than moving.
